“Ensuring Ecological Safety and Developing Democracy” NGO from Kapan brought a lawsuit on the threat to human life, health and possessions against Deno Gold Mining Company. The lawsuit is being examined at the Court of First Instance in Syunik Marz.

As Artur Kgazaryan, Legal Consultant of the NGO advised “EcoLur”, the organization intends to protect the interests of the residents living in the territory of mining exploitations carried out by Deno Gold Mining Company in Shahumyan region of Kapan.

Shahumyan Region is the suburb of Kapan where at the same time Shahumyan mine is located. It is not only dangerous to live in this region, but just to walk. Permanent explosions and drilling led to the destruction of houses and communications. Empty parts have been formed under houses and orchards and promoted to landslip processes. In 2008 Deno Gold Mining Company gave compensations for the relocation of 8 owners living in Shahumyan Region. The rest 140 families did not receive any compensation. “The company knows about the risks, as we ordered “Georisk” specialized organization from Yerevan to investigate this area. The reason for refusing to pay compensations is not the crisis, simply the expectations of the company in regard to Shahumyan region are not justified,” Artur Ghazaryan thinks.
